The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has officially sanctioned legendary captain Cristiano Ronaldo, handing down a 30-day suspension alongside a fine of 255 euros (£215). This disciplinary action stems from the veteran striker’s departure from the international team’s training camp during the previous month. Before adding he deserved to be punished, he accepted accountability and apologised to his team-mates and fans for his actions.
Dispute Over Team Selection
- The 41-year-old forward exited the Nations League squad during September.
- His departure occurred after he remained an unused substitute against Norway.
- Further frustration followed when he discovered he would not be in the starting lineup for the subsequent clash with Denmark on 1 October.
In a detailed public statement, the Al-Nassr player claimed his exit was a direct response to Portugal manager Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo alleged that the coach twice broke his word regarding playing time, which he characterized as an absolute breach of trust. While manager Jesus has denied that any such agreements were ever established with the player, he has notably kept the possibility of a future return to the national setup open.
Sanction Details and Future Status
The FPF disciplinary committee clarified that the 30-day ban was backdated to the start of the Denmark fixture. Consequently, the forward has already completed 19 days of the punishment and is expected to conclude the suspension by the end of October. The committee noted that they factored the player’s demonstrated remorse into their final decision, particularly as he publicly apologized to his teammates and supporters while accepting responsibility for his conduct.
FPF president Pedro Proenca expressed a strong desire to see the record-breaking forward reintegrated into the national team once the situation is fully resolved.
Ronaldo, who has secured both Euro 2016 and two Nations League titles with his country, currently holds the men’s world records with 146 goals across 234 international appearances. Currently playing his club football in Saudi Arabia for Al-Nassr, he joined the side in December 2022 and successfully secured a contract extension last year.
