Manchester United’s leadership is engaged in urgent talks to determine the future of head coach Michael Carrick after a crushing 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday. The loss has left the manager’s position in significant jeopardy, with expectations mounting within the club that a dismissal is imminent. The Guardian understands, with the expectation at the club being that Carrick will be sacked, but the United executive are actively considering his dismissal.

Despite the speculation, Carrick remained composed following the match. He acknowledged the gravity of the situation but insisted he was not anticipating an immediate departure. “I totally understand the situation,” he said. “I’m not expecting anything in particular, to be honest. Carrying on as normal and I love this place.” I love what I do and I feel the responsibility – we’ll have to wait and see.”.

United’s football director, Jason Wilcox, has identified former Newcastle manager Eddie Howe as his top target should the club decide to move on from the current coaching staff. Howe’s extensive Premier League background makes him a priority over other contenders, such as Unai Emery. Pursuing Emery would be significantly more expensive, as Aston Villa would likely demand roughly £20m in compensation for the Spaniard.

Within the club’s recruitment structure, other names have surfaced, though their support varies. Christopher Vivell, United’s head of recruitment, is a proponent of former Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann, while Antonio Conte is also viewed as a potential option. Ultimately, Wilcox’s recommendation is expected to carry the most weight with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who oversees football operations.

The club is currently restricted from announcing any formal dismissal until the New York Stock Exchange opens for trading, as the exchange is closed over the weekend. A similar delay occurred during the departure of Ruben Amorim in January, when a final decision made on a Sunday evening was not publicized until the following morning.

On the pitch, the team continues to struggle, having secured only one league victory this season. United currently sit 16th in the table, having endured their sixth loss in 12 matches across all competitions. Their last win remains a 10 September fixture against Sabah in the Champions League, with Rayan, Marcus Tavernier, and Evanilson scoring for Marco Rose’s Bournemouth during Sunday’s encounter.

Controversy also surrounded Carrick’s decision to leave captain Bruno Fernandes out of the starting lineup. Carrick maintained that the choice was based on footballing reasons rather than the captain’s recent public criticism of team tactics following the midweek Champions League loss to Como. Fernandes remained an unused substitute throughout the match. Who was an unused substitute, Carrick said: “There’s always times when you’re trying to make decisions that are to change the course of play and made a difference, but those are the de, on his decision to omit Fernandes.

Carrick was observed applauding supporters at the Stretford End as he left the pitch, an act he clarified was not a farewell gesture. “I’m feeling it for my players, they’re going through a tough spell,” he noted. “Some of it we can help, some of it the situation unravels and the boys are feeling it at the moment.” Following his exit, players like Fernandes were met with boos from the home crowd. “What it looks like and what’s next I really don’t know. Mixed emotions for the supporters to respond in that way. “To have that connection with the supporters, it’s mixed emotions, it’ll take a bit of time to digest but I certainly appreciate their support. That’s every player that I’m talking about.

Harry Maguire, serving as captain in the absence of Fernandes, publicly backed his manager despite the poor results. “Coming into the team last season he turned things around and got Champions League football this season,” Maguire said, adding that the squad members must hold themselves accountable. “As individuals, we’re not playing well enough. We have to look at ourselves and find something within ourselves to bring more to the team.” The situation is where we are and we haven’t had results or performances that have been good enough.”.
