Google Cloud Outage Disrupts Major UK Banks

A widespread Google Cloud outage centered in London disrupted digital services for several major U.K. banks on Tuesday morning. The technical issues began shortly after 2:00 a.m. Eastern Time (6:08 a.m. GMT), impacting institutions including HSBC, Lloyds, Halifax, and Revolut.

Because applications in other regions rely on London-based server networks, the operational ripple effects could extend beyond the United Kingdom. Additional system disruptions were noted elsewhere in Europe, though it remains unconfirmed if they share the same root cause.

Financial institutions responded swiftly to assure users regarding security concerns during the interruption.

  • Affected Banks: Lloyds, Halifax, HSBC, and Revolut
  • Service Status: Ongoing service disruption across digital platforms
  • Security Assurance: Customer funds and personal data remain fully secure

“We are currently experiencing a service disruption affecting multiple services,” digital bank Revolut stated in an email. “We can confirm that all our customers’ money and data are safe. We’ve been working to fix the issue since it was identified this morning and apologise to anyone affected and for any inconvenience caused.”

Google Cloud acknowledged the ongoing server problems early Tuesday and stated that engineers were actively working to resolve the failure. “Our engineering team continues to investigate the issue,” the company said. “We apologize to all who are affected by the disruption,” Google Cloud added, committing to a status update around 8:00 a.m. Eastern Time.
