Michael Carrick’s tenure at Manchester United continues to face scrutiny after his side dropped points in a 1-1 draw against Leeds at Elland Road on Sunday. With only one league victory recorded since August, the pressure on the manager is mounting as the team struggles to find rhythm and identity. Sunday afternoon’s display was the latest unconvincing outing under the 45-year-old.
The match saw United deploy an unusual 3-4-3 formation, a tactical setup often associated with predecessor Ruben Amorim. In this configuration, Bruno Fernandes operated as the nominal central forward in a free role, a decision that ultimately failed to provide the necessary control or attacking cohesion. Zero rhythm or control, and the same prevailing sense that the wheels could clatter off anytime, it featured an odd formation.
United initially took the lead when Bryan Mbeumo scored in the first half, finishing a well-worked move orchestrated by Youri Tielemans and Amad Diallo. Despite holding the advantage, the team appeared fragile and unable to extend their lead, leading to a frustrating afternoon for the visitors. Unchanged for a fifth consecutive game, were roared on by a crowd who delighted in Martínez’s first contribution, a stray pass hoofed out of play, daniel Farke’s team.
Leeds restored parity shortly after the interval. Following a corner, Noussair Mazraoui was outmuscled by Tarik Muharemovic, whose flick found Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The forward capitalized on the opportunity, firing home the equalizer to pull his side level.
The match was characterized by intensity rather than high-quality chances. Tensions flared when Bruno Fernandes was booked for a late tackle on Tarik Muharemovic, and Leeds’ Gabriel Gudmundsson also received a yellow card for a challenge on Andrey Santos. When Fernandes ran though and a clumsy touch caused him to scythe down Tarik Muharemovic, England did act – booking Manchester United’s captain when play next paused, to the delight of Leeds fans. Gabriel Gudmundsson was also shown a yellow card – for clipping Andrey Santos – in a contest that was blood and thunderous but lacked regular goalmouth incident. Gudmundsson, the left wing-back in Farke’s 5-2-2-1, did splay the visitors’ defence with a cross that wrongfooted Harry Maguire but it found no teammate, before Jayden Bogle, the right wing-back, repeated the act as Leed.
Lisandro Martínez returned to the starting lineup after issuing a public apology regarding the club’s recruitment efforts, but he was substituted at halftime for Noussair Mazraoui. The defender’s Thursday apology enough to clear the way though his day ended at the interval, five days after his scathing diatribe aimed at Jason Wilcox – for the director of football’s iffy recruitment – Lisandro Martínez was selected by Carrick. Martínez’s removal for the second half brought Noussair Mazraoui to the fray as 45 minutes stood between Carrick and a morale-boosting victory.
Tactical adjustments in the 73rd minute saw both managers turn to their benches, with Lukas Nmecha replacing Noah Okafor for Leeds and Mason Mount coming on for Carlos Baleba, yet neither change could produce a winner. The noise from a febrile home support was dialled up when Carlos Baleba sent Anton Stach to the turf and Darren England saw no infringement. On 73 minutes Farke took off Noah Okafor for Lukas Nmecha and Carrick removed Baleba for Mason Mount but none of the changes could spark a winner.
While Carrick currently avoids an immediate exit, the team’s ongoing inconsistency leaves them in a precarious position. The focus now shifts toward Wednesday’s crucial Champions League fixture against Como, which is being viewed as a must-win game to stabilize the campaign. Again, to double the campaign’s league wins tally to two you have to wonder where this already flatlining team are heading, game-wise the answer is Wednesday’s trip to Como yet after failing.
Reflecting on the atmosphere at Elland Road, the venue served as a reminder of past turbulence, specifically the January meeting that ended 1-1 and resulted in the dismissal of Carrick’s predecessor two days later after he publicly urged the recruitment department to “do their job.”
