Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital on Friday after collapsing while observing the club’s reserve team during a training session. The Bundesliga side confirmed that the 40-year-old is undergoing extensive medical examinations and remains under professional care, though reports indicate he is currently in a stable condition.
Kompany had been struggling with a virus for approximately a week, a situation that caused him to miss a pre-match news conference last Tuesday ahead of Bayern’s Champions League fixture against Arsenal. Despite his illness, the manager was present on the touchline during Wednesday’s match. German football journalist Taufig Khalil noted that Kompany appeared unwell during a game against RB Leipzig last weekend, yet he chose to attend the midweek European clash in the rain. Kompany was appointed to lead Bayern Munich in May 2024, succeeding Thomas Tuchel. His tenure follows a managerial stint at Burnley, where he secured the Championship title in 2022-23. Despite the Clarets’ subsequent relegation from the Premier League, his performance earned him the position at the German club, where he has since guided the team to domestic success and a run to the 2025-26 Champions League semi-finals. He has led Bayern to the German top-flight title in the past two seasons and reached the 2025-26 Champions League semi-finals before being beaten by eventual winners Paris St-Germain.
As a player, Kompany enjoyed an illustrious 11-year career at Manchester City, captaining the team to four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and four League Cups.
His former club expressed support, with a social media post reading, “Everyone at Manchester City is wishing a speedy recovery to our former captain and club legend, Vincent Kompany.
