Counter-terrorism police have apprehended a 22-year-old British national, marking the seventh arrest linked to an ongoing investigation into a security incident near RAF Fairford that occurred on September 27. The individual is being held on suspicion of the preparation of terrorist acts, with authorities confirming the detention relates to “activity that took place close to RAF Fairford.”

Vicki Evans, the senior national coordinator for counterterrorism policing, stated that detectives continue to follow multiple lines of inquiry and remain fully committed to exploring every aspect of the case. While this latest arrest follows two weeks of investigation, six previously detained suspects related to an alleged plot against the base have since been released on bail.

The security situation remains opaque, though it coincides with the departure of US B-52 and B-1 bombers from the Gloucestershire site this past Sunday. Addressing the withdrawal on Monday, US President Donald Trump told reporters his administration removed the aircraft due to “some threats,” adding that those responsible appeared to be “linked to Iran,” though he did not provide further specifics. Though it’s unclear whether the move is connected to the arrests, the US moved its B-52 and B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford on Sunday.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that the UK has observed “strong indications” of Iranian involvement, yet offered no evidence. Tehran has officially denied any role in the incident. Historically, Iran has asserted that any military installation utilized to launch attacks against its territory is considered a legitimate target, adding a layer of complexity to the ongoing diplomatic and security tensions surrounding the base.
