Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of targeting six Ukrainian energy facilities shortly after US President Donald Trump declared a ceasefire. Although the US leader stated on Sunday that the truce would be effective immediately, the Ukrainian president reported that Russian forces proceeded to strike gas stations, energy infrastructure, and other critical sites.
The impact of these attacks has been significant. According to Ukraine’s state news agency, Ukrinform, a strike in the city of Izyum demolished power grids and resulted in widespread blackouts. Additional overnight strikes targeted railway and energy infrastructure located in western Ukraine. In a separate incident on Monday, emergency crews attended to a drone strike that hit a residential building in Kharkiv.
Diplomatic rhetoric remains tense following the announcement. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated on Monday that Ukraine is not entitled to the respite that a ceasefire would offer.
